Hi, I’m Joseph Chan (he/him). Somatic Psychotherapist, Brainspotting Consultant, and Clinical Supervisor.

I am very excited to join The Refuge team! From the decolonized and social justice model to the mission to increase access for the most vulnerable populations, and the incredibly compassionate staff, it feel so aligned with my core values and beliefs around healing.

In my time as a social worker, I have worked in hospitals, schools, a Child Advocacy Center, and the SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Center of New Jersey. In these settings, I have provided individual, group, and family therapy. During my decades of practice, I’ve also supervised many MSW students, individuals accruing their clinical hours towards independent licensure, and independently licensed therapists looking to enhance their clinical skills and cultural humility, especially when working with individuals who have been marginalized.

Lately, I have been exploring more macro ways to share my knowledge and experience as a healer with those newer to practice, and embrace this newer identifier as “elder,” so the timing of this opportunity feels like synchronicity.

As a clinical supervisor, I hope to instill an inner trust within my supervisees that helps guide attunement, presence, creativity, respect, compassion, collaboration, and understanding of each individual client’s unique system, and ability to heal themselves.

What does liberation mean to you?

Liberation is the freedom for to connect, reclaim, and embrace the many parts of yourself that may have adapted, had to be edited or hide in response to oppression, threat, and/or harm in order to find safety.

As a psychotherapist/social worker/practitioner, my work is support others to deprogram from all of the harmful and oppressive aspects of our “provider as expert” pathologizing medical model and move toward client as expert. All the while embracing a deep respect for culture and understanding of intergenerational trauma and adaptations to trauma, and to trust that you have the ability to heal your, and aren’t broken.

What special training do you have?
